John Whitmire — Mayor of Houston
Who Decides
John Whitmire is the 63rd Mayor of Houston, elected in December 2023. As mayor, he leads the City of Houston and its 22,000+ employees, overseeing public safety, infrastructure, parks, and municipal services for 2.3 million residents.

Mayor John Whitmire runs Houston as the city's chief executive officer. He manages daily operations for the nation's fourth-largest city and makes sure local laws get enforced across our community.

The mayor's job touches every part of city life. Whitmire appoints department heads who run police, fire, public works, and other city services. These appointments need City Council approval. He also picks people to serve on advisory boards that help shape city policies.

Beyond managing, Mayor Whitmire serves as Houston's official voice and representative. He signs all ordinances and resolutions that City Council passes into law. During council meetings, he presides over discussions and can vote on issues that affect our neighborhoods.

Each year, the mayor presents Houston's budget to City Council. This budget determines how much money goes to parks, roads, emergency services, and other programs our community relies on. He also keeps council members informed about the city's financial health throughout the year.

Residents can reach Mayor Whitmire's office by calling 311 or emailing mayor@houstontx.gov. Media interview requests go to Communications Director Mary Benton. People who want to request the mayor for an event can use the city's online scheduling system at houstontx.gov.
