Good first step: Share UHD students or families who may not know about these free resources
Hey, did you know UH-Downtown has free counseling, health services, food help, and over 200 student clubs? Check it out at uhd.edu/student-life
The Division of Student Success and Student Life (3SL) at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) is your go-to hub for nearly everything outside the classroom. From tutoring and counseling to fitness and student clubs, one division connects you to the support you need — whether you are just starting out or finishing your last semester.
3SL covers six big areas. Academic support comes through the Gator Success Institute, the Academic Success Center, and Accessible Education Services — offices that help you study smarter and stay on track. Health and wellness resources include the Student Health Center, Counseling Services, and Sports and Fitness facilities for your body and mind. A Basic Needs Center is there if you are dealing with food, housing, or other everyday challenges. Student Leadership and Involvement and the Center for Student Advocacy and Community help you find your place among 200-plus student organizations and weekly campus events. Pre-college programs connect future students early, and the full range of services is available both in person and remotely.
Start by reaching out to the main 3SL office — a staff member can point you toward the right department for your situation. If you are unsure where to begin, think about your biggest need right now: academic help, health support, community, or something else. From there, explore the specific office that fits. You can also drop in on campus events to get a feel for UHD culture before committing to anything.

3SL works alongside UHD's academic colleges, so your professors and advisors are connected to the same support network. If a faculty member refers you to a campus resource, it is likely part of this same system. Community partners also collaborate with 3SL, meaning some resources may extend beyond campus.
College is a lot to navigate on your own. 3SL brings together staff from many offices so you do not have to hunt down help alone. Research shows that students who get involved and use campus resources are more likely to graduate and land stronger careers. That matters even more in Houston, where a degree can open real doors to economic opportunity.
