Good first step: Act Texas Children's prenatal and baby care class registration
Visit texaschildrens.org and search 'prenatal classes' to sign up for a class or free breastfeeding support group near you.
Texas Children's Pavilion for Women offers prenatal and baby care classes in Houston and Austin. Classes are open to any family, no matter where you plan to deliver. You can learn in person, live on Zoom, or at your own pace online.
Classes cover a wide range of topics: childbirth preparation led by Lamaze-certified educators, basic baby care (swaddling, diapering, bathing, soothing), breastfeeding and pumping, infant CPR and safety, newborn sleep and scheduling, and grandparenting. Families expecting multiples or a baby who will need Neonatal or Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (NICU or CICU) care can book private consultations tailored to their needs. A free weekly breastfeeding support group, led by a lactation consultant, is also available. Virtual maternity tours help your family get familiar with the Pavilion before delivery day.
Start by thinking about what feels most uncertain for you right now — feeding, labor, bringing baby home — then pick the class that fits. Choose your format: show up in person, join a live Zoom session, or work through a self-paced online course on your own schedule. If you have a specific or complex situation, ask about private coaching or consultation sessions. You can register for Houston or Austin classes directly through Texas Children's.

These classes complement care from your own OB, midwife, or pediatrician — they are an add-on, not a replacement. If your baby may need NICU or CICU care, the newborn hospitalization class can help you connect what you learn here with the medical team at Texas Children's. Grandparents who take the grandparents' class will be better prepared to support you at home, which makes a real difference in those first weeks.
Becoming a parent is exciting and a lot to take in at once. These classes help you feel ready — not rushed. Certified instructors keep groups small so your questions actually get answered. Whether you are a first-time parent, an expecting grandparent, or a family preparing for a baby with special medical needs, there is a class built for your situation.
