Getting ready for your child's doctor visit doesn't have to feel rushed. This guide walks you through every step — from picking a pediatrician to walking through the door — so your appointment goes smoothly for your whole family.
Texas Children's Pediatrics lays out a clear checklist for families heading into a first visit or a follow-up. You'll learn what to bring, how early to arrive, how to prep your child emotionally, and how current patients can use MyChart PreCheck-In to handle most check-in steps from home before the appointment day.
Start by choosing a primary care physician (PCP) — a doctor who will track and coordinate all of your child's health care over time. Once you have a PCP, schedule your visit online through the practice location page or by phone. For a first appointment, plan to arrive 20 minutes early to handle paperwork. If you're an established patient with updated insurance or personal information, give yourself extra time at the front desk too. Download and complete any required medical forms before you arrive so your visit can start on time. Pack your photo ID, your child's current insurance card, a written list of all medications your child takes (including over-the-counter medicines, doses, and strengths), and all past medical records — immunization records, growth charts, diagnosis notes, and any reports from urgent care, emergency visits, X-rays, or lab work. If your child sees other providers outside this practice, ask those offices to send records directly. Write down your questions and concerns before you go, and if your child is sick, jot down symptoms, when they started, and how often they happen. Take notes during the visit so you can remember the doctor's instructions later. If you're a current patient with a MyChart account, watch for a PreCheck-In message about a week before your appointment. Through MyChart, you can pay your copay, update insurance and contact details, review medications and allergies, and answer health questionnaires — all before you leave home. Need to cancel? Call the practice or use MyChart to cancel or reschedule at least one hour ahead of time.

If your child receives care from specialists, urgent care centers, or emergency rooms outside of Texas Children's Pediatrics, ask those providers to send all records — including X-rays and lab results — to your child's primary care office. This helps your pediatrician coordinate complete, up-to-date care.
A little prep goes a long way. When you arrive ready — forms filled out, records in hand, questions written down — the doctor spends more time on your child and less time tracking down details. That means better care and less stress for you.
