Ready to become a Gator? The University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) welcomes students at every stage — from first-time freshmen to graduate applicants. Each path has its own application, a modest fee, and a short list of documents. Here is what you need to know to get started.
UHD accepts seven types of applicants: freshman, transfer, visiting, former/returning, international, post-baccalaureate (post-bac), and graduate. Each type has its own online application. Fees are $50 for most domestic applicants, $35 for domestic graduate applicants, and $80 for international applicants at any level. Former/returning students have their fee waived. Current UHD students and alumni applying to a graduate program may also qualify for a fee waiver. All fees are non-refundable. Every path requires official transcripts, and some paths ask for extra documents. If your transcripts are from a school outside the United States, UHD requires a credential evaluation from a recognized service before you apply.
First, figure out which applicant type fits you. Freshman: you are finishing high school, earned a GED, or have fewer than 15 college-level credits. Transfer: you have completed 15 or more college credit hours after high school graduation. Visiting: you are already enrolled at another school and want to take one semester or a summer of courses at UHD. Former/returning: you attended UHD before but have not been enrolled for the last three consecutive long semesters. International: you hold a non-immigrant visa or have applied for immigrant status but have not yet adjusted your status with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Post-baccalaureate (post-bac): you already have a bachelor's degree and want to earn another degree or take undergraduate courses to prepare for graduate school. Graduate: you are ready to pursue a master's or other graduate-level program. Once you know your type, use the UHD Direct application for that category, or the separate graduate application if you are going that route. After you submit, check your email for access to the myUHD Student Portal, where you pay your application fee. Then gather your transcripts and any other required documents and upload them to your application checklist.

If you are a former UHD student, ask about the Return 2 Complete (R2C) program before reapplying — you can request an unofficial estimate of how many degree hours you have left. Graduate applicants should also visit their specific program's page, because many programs require extra materials such as letters of recommendation. Current UHD students and alumni applying to graduate programs should contact the Office of Graduate Admissions about a possible fee waiver before submitting a payment.
