Topic: Donating crypto like Bitcoin or Ethereum to Houston Food BankSteps: 1) Pick a coin 2) Choose amount 3) Transfer from wallet 4) Get tax receiptTime needed: Just a few minutesTax benefit: You may avoid capital gains tax and deduct the full value on federal taxesSource: Houston Food Bank via Crypto for Charity tool
Houston Food Bank accepts Bitcoin, Ethereum, and more than 165 other cryptocurrencies as donations. Your digital currency is converted to U.S. dollars and sent straight to the food bank — no middleman fees eating into your gift. You get a tax receipt right away, and you may avoid capital gains tax on top of it.
The food bank uses a tool called Crypto for Charity to accept digital currency gifts. When you donate, an intermediary nonprofit called FreeWill Impact Fund receives your crypto, converts it to U.S. dollars, and passes the cash on to Houston Food Bank. You get an immediate tax receipt from FreeWill Impact Fund. The whole process works in four steps: pick a coin, choose an amount, transfer from your digital wallet, and receive your receipt.
You do not need to be a crypto expert to give. If you already hold cryptocurrency in a digital wallet, you can complete the donation in minutes. Choose which coin you want to give from more than 165 supported currencies — including Bitcoin and Ethereum. Enter the dollar amount or coin amount you want to donate. Then transfer directly from your wallet using the on-screen instructions. Your tax receipt arrives immediately after the transfer is complete. Talk to a financial or legal advisor before you give if you want to understand exactly how the tax benefits apply to your situation.

This giving option sits alongside Houston Food Bank's other ways to give. If crypto is not your thing, the food bank welcomes cash donations, volunteer time, and food drives. Crypto giving is simply one more tool — a good fit if you hold digital assets and want to stretch their impact.
Every dollar — or digital coin — helps Houston Food Bank put food on tables across our city. Donating crypto directly to charity can be smarter than selling first. When you sell, you may owe capital gains tax on any increase in value. Donate the coin instead, and you may skip that tax bill entirely while still claiming a federal income tax deduction for the full value of your gift. That means more money feeding neighbors, less going to taxes.
