HCLIP is a summer internship program led by Harris County Commissioner Rodney Ellis for college students aged 18 and over who are interested in public service and leadership. Interns work inside Harris County government and related nonprofits in areas like policy, communications, engineering, and youth education. The program builds real-world skills, grows professional networks, and welcomes students from diverse educational, economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
• Places college students aged 18 and over in Harris County government offices and related nonprofits for a 10-week summer internship
• Offers internship pathways in policy, community affairs, communications, engineering, technology, senior programs, and youth education
• Assigns each intern a mentor from their host organization for guidance and feedback
• Provides professional development through workshops, public policy lunch and learns, and training sessions
• Facilitates networking events, public service volunteering, and social gatherings
• Matches interns to placements based on their skills, interests, and career goals
1. Check that you meet the criteria: you must be currently enrolled in a community college, undergraduate, or graduate program with a solid academic record
2. Note that post-graduates are considered on a case-by-case basis — contact the program if this applies to you
3. International students are welcome but must have their own work authorization — HCLIP does not sponsor visas
4. Plan to work full-time (about 40 hours per week) in person — no fully virtual option is available
5. Arrange your own housing before the program starts, as HCLIP does not provide or assist with housing
