Overview
Arab American Heritage Month happens every April. President Biden made it official in 2021. This month celebrates the many gifts Arab Americans have given our country. Nearly 4 million Americans trace their roots to Arab countries.
Arab Americans have shaped our culture in amazing ways. They have written powerful books, created beautiful art, and started successful businesses. From "The Prophet" by Khalil Gibran to modern films on Netflix, Arab American artists tell stories that connect us all. Their work helps us understand different experiences while finding what we share.
We can celebrate by reading books by Arab American writers like Naomi Shihab Nye and Hala Alyan. We can also support Arab-owned businesses in our neighborhoods. Local bakeries, restaurants, and shops run by Arab Americans add richness to our communities. When we buy from them, we support our neighbors and try new flavors.
Learning about Arab American history opens our eyes too. The Arab American National Museum has online galleries we can explore. Documentaries like "A Thousand And One Journeys" show the real stories of Arab Americans. These films help us see past stereotypes and learn about real people and families.
This month gives us a chance to appreciate the Arab Americans in our community. We can watch movies by Arab American filmmakers, try new recipes, or simply learn more about our neighbors. Every small action helps build stronger connections in our neighborhoods.
