Overview
Everything Houston renters need to know — security deposits, repairs, eviction timelines, and where to get free legal help when things go wrong. Written in plain language for people who need answers now.
What landlords must do
Texas law requires landlords to make repairs that affect your health or safety within a reasonable time after written notice. Keep a copy of every request you make.
Security deposits
Your landlord has 30 days to return your deposit after you move out. They must provide an itemized list of any deductions. If they do not, you may be entitled to three times the amount wrongfully withheld.
Eviction process
A landlord cannot lock you out or shut off utilities. Eviction requires a court order. You have the right to appear in court and present your case. Free legal help is available through Lone Star Legal Aid and Houston Volunteer Lawyers.
Where to get help
Call Lone Star Legal Aid at 713-652-0077 for free legal advice. Houston Volunteer Lawyers offers walk-in clinics on Tuesdays. The Harris County Justice of the Peace courts handle eviction cases — you have the right to request a trial.
