Seminar Speaker: Dr. Thomas Maimone from the University of California-Berkeley

Dr. Thomas Maimone is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, where his research group works at the intersection of organic synthesis and natural products. Synthesis is the central theme of the Maimone Lab — spanning total synthesis, new synthetic methods, catalyst design, and drug discovery applications. The group pursues innovative approaches to assembling complex, biologically active natural products, with an eye toward understanding and re-engineering their structures for use in biology and medicine. Dr. Maimone earned his B.S. from UC Berkeley in 2004, completed his Ph.D. at The Scripps Research Institute in 2009 under Prof. Phil Baran, and conducted postdoctoral research at MIT with Prof. Stephen Buchwald in palladium-catalyzed chemistry. He returned to Berkeley as a faculty member in 2012. He has received numerous awards including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award, and the 2026 A.R. Katritzky Junior Award in Heterocyclic Chemistry.
