The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides benefits and services to the nation's 18 million veterans and their families. The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston provides comprehensive healthcare to eligible veterans. VA benefits include disability compensation, education and training assistance through the GI Bill, home loan guaranty programs, and burial benefits. The Houston VA healthcare system is one of the largest in the country. The VA's Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program funds local nonprofits that provide housing assistance to homeless veterans in Houston.
