The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is a federal government agency that manages the country's energy policy, oversees the nuclear weapons program, funds scientific research, and promotes energy efficiency and conservation. It was created in 1977 and sponsors more physical science research than any other U.S. federal agency, largely through its national laboratories. In Harris County (Houston), the DOE has a local presence through the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) office at 1011 Highway 6 S., Suite 309, Houston, TX 77077, which focuses on natural gas and oil research. The DOE issues grants to organizations in the Houston area to support energy, environmental, and scientific projects.
