The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the federal government's principal agency for protecting the health of all Americans and providing essential human services. HHS programs cover healthcare access, mental health, substance abuse treatment, aging services, child welfare, maternal health, disability services, and HIV/AIDS programs. HHS administers Medicare, oversees Medicaid alongside states, funds community health centers, and leads public health preparedness. For Houston residents, HHS funds local programs through grantees and oversees the Health Resources and Services Administration which supports local clinics.
