The Harris County Flood Control District works to reduce the risk of flooding for residents and businesses throughout Harris County. Governed by Harris County Commissioners Court, the district manages bayous, detention basins, and the Harris County Flood Warning System. Flood control items appear on the Commissioners Court agenda and dedicated public meetings address watershed planning, bond projects, and community resilience.
The Harris County Flood Control District and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers have widened Hunting Bayou's channel for about four miles and built the Curtis M. Graves Detention Basin, a 75-acre stormwater basin near Homestead Road and Loop 610 with roughly 1,000 acre-feet of storage capacity. Together the channel and basin work address chronic flooding in Kashmere Gardens and northeast Fifth Ward.
