Harris County Wetlands Protection and Creek Restoration Project

Harris County Commissioners Court approved spending $13,800 to purchase wetland mitigation credits for the Channel Rehabilitation at Kuykendahl and Cypress Hill Stormwater Detention Basin project. This project restores and improves flood protection in northwest Harris County's Cypress Creek watershed. When construction projects must impact wetlands for flood control improvements, federal law requires replacing those wetlands elsewhere. Harris County buys credits from the Greens Bayou Wetlands Mitigation Bank, which protects and restores wetlands in our region. This creates a net environmental benefit while allowing critical flood infrastructure projects to move forward. The Kuykendahl and Cypress Hill project will reduce flooding for families and businesses in Precinct 3 communities like northwest Harris County, Spring, and Tomball areas. Better stormwater management protects homes, schools, and roads from flood damage during heavy rains and hurricanes. The project follows strict U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permits to ensure environmental protection.
