Harris County Commissioners Court approved changes to a contract for floating islands at the Reverend William and Audrey Lawson Stormwater Detention Basin. These floating islands are innovative green infrastructure that helps clean storm water naturally while providing habitat for birds and fish. The project is part of the Clear Creek Watershed improvement efforts funded by flood control bonds. Floating islands work by using plants and microorganisms to filter pollutants from storm water before it flows into our bayous and the Gulf of Mexico. This matters because cleaner water means healthier neighborhoods and reduced flooding risks for families in southeast Harris County. The contract amendment adds 10 calendar days to complete the work, showing our county's commitment to getting environmental projects done right. This type of nature-based solution costs less than traditional concrete infrastructure while creating beautiful spaces our community can enjoy. The project includes goals for minority and women-owned business participation, supporting local economic development.
