Want to tell the Mayor and City Council what matters to your neighborhood? Houston City Council holds a public session every Tuesday where any resident can speak. This guide walks you through signing up, what to bring, and how to make your minutes count.
Public session is the part of Houston City Council meetings where everyday residents can address the Mayor and Council members directly. You choose to speak for 1, 2, or 3 minutes. Your name, address, phone number, and topic are collected when you register — that information helps your district council member follow up with you. After you sign up, a council member's office or a city department may reach out to learn more about your topic.
Register before Monday at 3:00 PM for the Tuesday session you want to attend. Write out exactly what you plan to say and time yourself — your window goes by fast. On Tuesday, arrive at City Hall with a valid ID, pass through security, and check in at the entrance. Head to the second floor for the council chambers. If you bike, parking is available across the street at the Houston Public Library.
Walk and Roll Houston supports residents in engaging with local government on transportation and mobility issues. Speaking at City Council connects directly to decisions about Houston streets, bike lanes, sidewalks, and transit. Your district council member is a key contact — they receive your registration information and may reach out before the meeting.
