"HPL's older branches had aging internet cables, computers, and data room equipment that needed replacing. The upgrades will make public computers faster and more reliable — important for neighbors who use the library for job searching, school, and everyday digital needs. The Summer Reading Program helps kids and adults keep reading habits strong over the summer."
Houston Public Library received more than $449,000 from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission to upgrade broadband and technology at 10 Houston library locations. Improvements include network cabling, HVAC upgrades in data rooms, better public computers, and more reliable digital services. Some branches will temporarily close for one to three weeks during construction. HPL is also launching its 2026 Summer Reading Program, UNEARTH a Story, running June 1–July 31 for all ages.
The Texas State Library and Archives Commission (TSLAC) has awarded the Houston Public Library (HPL) more than $449,000 through its Library Infrastructure Facility Improvement (LIFI) grant program to support broadband and technology infrastructure upgrades at 10 library locations across the city.
These upgrades are designed to enhance internet connectivity, modernize technology infrastructure, and improve access to digital resources for customers across Houston.
After conducting a systemwide assessment, HPL identified several library locations with aging infrastructure in need of technology enhancements. Through the LIFI grant program, funding was awarded to support critical improvements including:

To safely complete this work, select library locations will temporarily close for approximately one to three weeks during scheduled construction periods.
Public libraries continue to serve as essential access points for technology, internet connectivity, education, workforce development, and digital services. These improvements will help ensure customers have access to stronger, more reliable technology resources and a better overall library experience.
The project is made possible through funding from the U.S. Department of the Treasury to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

HOUSTON - Houston Public Library (HPL) is launching its 2026 Summer Reading Program, UNEARTH A Story, a citywide initiative running June 1 through July 31, 2026. Designed for all ages, the program invites Houstonians to read more, explore more, and stay engaged all summer long while earning rewards along the way.
More than just a reading challenge, Summer Reading is one of the Library’s largest annual efforts to connect residents to free resources, programs, and opportunities across all 40+ locations. The youth Summer Reading Program is generously supported by the McGovern Foundation, helping expand access to reading, learning, and enrichment opportunities for children across Houston.
“We know how busy summer can get for families, but even a few minutes of reading each day can make a real difference,” said Sandy Gaw, Library Director. “This program is about making it easy and fun for people to stay engaged, build habits, and take advantage of everything the library offers. We want every Houstonian to sign up and be part of it.”
This year’s campaign places a strong emphasis on reaching Houston’s diverse communities, with expanded bilingual outreach including Spanish-language materials, registration options, and partnerships with trusted community organizations to ensure broader access and participation.
Dig Into Reading, Earn Rewards, and Join the Adventure
Registration is open, and all Houstonians are encouraged to sign up early at houstonlibrary.org/srp. Participants can log reading minutes, complete challenges, and earn prizes throughout the program.
Readers of all ages can unlock milestone rewards, with grand prizes including bikes courtesy of CYCLE Houston, Nintendo Switch Lite consoles, Kindle Scribe and Fire Tablets.
From the first page to the final prize drawing, the message is simple: the more you read, the more you uncover.

Houston Public Library's BOOKLink at Hobby Airport was featured, along with a few other innovative public library airport projects, in the March 2026 American Libraries article, "Airport Libraries Take Off."
Our TECHLink spaces are designed to unlock creativity, technology, and hands‑on learning for everyone. In the latest episode of The Urban EdTech Experience, HPL’s Chief Operating Officer, John Middleton, shares why these spaces are transforming our community.
John explains how TECHLink empowers Houstonians of all ages to explore new skills - offering FREE access to podcast and music recording studios, video editing tools, 3D printing, and digital design. These spaces were created to spark curiosity, support lifelong learning, and make advanced technology accessible to all. No experience required. It’s a powerful example of how libraries continue to evolve, meeting people where they are and helping them reach where they want to go.
The conversation also highlights how entrepreneurs use TECHLink to create custom products for sale or showcase their brand on hats, t-shirts and other merchandise. It’s a collaborative environment where customers share ideas and help each other succeed.
