New York Tops Nation for Youth Mental Health Protection

Good Good Good

Growing Up Here
New York ranks first among all 50 states for protecting youth mental health. Governor Hochul credits phone-free schools, social media rules, and mental health training. These changes help kids focus better and feel safer in our communities. Our community grows stronger when we learn together and share knowledge across neighborhoods.

New York now leads all 50 states in protecting young people's mental health. The Anxious Generation Movement rated every state on childhood independence, social media limits, and technology rules. New York and Utah earned the top rating as "national leaders."

Governor Kathy Hochul says her role as New York's first mom governor drives her work. She spent a year listening to families across the state after the pandemic. What she heard led to major changes in how we protect our children from harmful technology and social pressures.

The biggest change came with phone-free schools that started in September 2025. Students cannot use phones from the first bell to the last bell. Teachers report 92% of schools had smooth transitions. About 83% saw better classrooms and student engagement. Some 75% of teachers say they can teach more effectively now.

We also created new rules for social media companies. Apps with endless scrolling must warn users about addiction risks. Companies cannot use artificial intelligence features for kids under 18. All 10th graders now get mental health first aid training - more than 180,000 young people learning to help themselves and their friends.

Our state invested $1 billion to fight the youth mental health crisis. Governor Hochul wants every state to follow New York's example. Over 40 states now have some screen-free policies, with many seeing better test scores and more library book checkouts.
