Growing Up Here
Children's entertainer Ms. Rachel spoke with 9-year-old Deiver at the Dilley Immigration Center in South Texas. She found conditions that include medical problems, lights that never turn off, and bad food. Rachel is using her platform to demand better care for children in our immigration system. Our community grows stronger when we learn together and share knowledge across neighborhoods.

Popular children's entertainer Ms. Rachel spoke with 9-year-old Deiver Henao Jimenez at the Dilley Immigration Center in South Texas. The conversation revealed troubling conditions that affect children and families in our immigration system.

During their video call, Deiver told Ms. Rachel he wished he could leave so he could attend his school's spelling bee. Ms. Rachel described the call as "unbelievably surreal" and said it felt like talking to someone in jail. The conditions at the facility include medical negligence, lights that never shut off, and moldy food.

Ms. Rachel has been using her platform to speak out for children's rights. She believes that caring for all children is a basic value. "It's political to believe that children are worthy of love and care, and that every child is equal," she told NBC News. Her work extends beyond entertainment to advocacy for children worldwide.

In recent years, Ms. Rachel has raised money for children affected by war and crises around the world. In April 2025, she and her husband donated $1 million to provide 2 million meals to people facing hunger. She continues to call for better treatment of children in detention and immigration facilities.

Our community can learn from Ms. Rachel's example of using our voices to protect children. Her advocacy shows how we can speak up for vulnerable children in our immigration system and work toward more humane treatment for all families.
