Founded in 1999, HYPE Freedom School is a nonprofit that empowers youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and their families through equitable, literacy-based programming. Selected by the Children's Defense Fund in 2000 to sponsor CDF Freedom Schools, it is the first Greater Houston-area and oldest CDF Freedom Schools site in Texas.
HYPE Freedom School, a United Way of Greater Houston partner, runs a six-week summer program for students in grades K–12. The program uses a culturally affirming, trauma-informed curriculum to build literacy skills and prevent summer learning loss. Families can sign up through Scholar Registration during open enrollment. The program is designed to be rich in reading and learning activities that connect with students' backgrounds and experiences.
