House bill directing NIST to develop best practices for measuring data center energy use and study energy demand forecasting data.
This is a House bill (HR 9372) from the 119th Congress. It would direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology to create best practices for measuring how much energy data centers use. It would also study whether enough data exists to better forecast energy demand. As of June 18, 2026, the bill was referred to the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
Data centers use large amounts of electricity. If better energy measurements and forecasts are developed, that could affect how power is planned and supplied in communities where data centers operate.
