Harris County Commissioners Court will vote on July 9, 2026 to renew a one-year contract with The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD. The $10,625,659 agreement covers mental health and intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) services for inmates in Harris County Sheriff's Office detention facilities from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. County data shows roughly 75 percent of the jail population has a mental health indicator, with nearly 3,000 inmates on psychotropic medications daily.
Harris County jails house thousands of people with mental health or developmental disabilities. This contract decides who provides their medical care for one year. Taxpayers fund it, and the quality of care can affect public safety and county costs.
