On May 28, 2026, Harris County Commissioners Court unanimously passed Resolution 26-3383, recognizing June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth National Independence Day in Harris County. The resolution was jointly sponsored by the County Judge and all four Precinct Commissioners. Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, when Union troops in Galveston, Texas, announced freedom for all enslaved people — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
