Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones of Precinct 4 is asking the Harris County Commissioners Court to officially recognize August 15, 2026, as Indian Independence Day in Harris County. The resolution was introduced on June 26, 2026, and will be considered at the Commissioners Court meeting on July 9, 2026, at 1001 Preston, First Floor, Houston. August 15 marks the 79th anniversary of India's independence from British rule in 1947.
