Food Date Labeling Act of 2025

This bill would create uniform rules for date labels on food packaging. Foods labeled with a quality date must say "BEST If Used By" or "BB." Foods labeled with a discard date must say "USE By" or "UB." Dates must appear in easy-to-read font in a visible spot. The bill was referred to the Subcommittee on Nutrition and Foreign Agriculture in January 2026. It does not apply to infant formula.

Date labels on food you buy at Houston grocery stores would have to use specific words, which could change how you decide when to eat or throw away food.
