The Texas Education Agency oversees the state's system of over 1,000 school districts and charter school systems serving 5.5 million students. TEA sets the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) curriculum standards, administers the STAAR assessment program, distributes state education funding to school districts, and holds districts accountable through the A-F accountability rating system. TEA administers state and federal special education requirements, the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the Texas School for the Deaf. TEA also oversees the free and reduced-price school lunch and breakfast programs statewide.
