FAM Houston is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Houston, Texas, that works for justice by building empowered community among refugees, immigrants, and local Houstonians through practices of hospitality, mutuality, storytelling, and inclusivity. Its programs include Pamoja (pairing newcomer and Houstonian families to form mutual-aid companion relationships), the Women's Empowerment Group (WEG, creating community and support for Congolese and other refugee women, including adult English classes, emergency assistance, and healthcare support), and Shamba Ya Amani ('The Farm of Peace'), a half-acre community farm in the Alief neighborhood run by a collective of women refugees and immigrants from Africa alongside local Houstonians, growing diverse and culturally relevant crops and operating a beekeeping apprenticeship program. FAM Houston was founded in 2017 and is rooted in the belief that insiders and outsiders befriending one another is essential to finding true belonging.
