Opera Gallery opened at River Oaks District in March 2025, and walking in is completely free. You can stand inches away from original works by Picasso, Monet, Chagall, Kehinde Wiley, and others. Whether you collect art or just love looking at it, this is a genuine museum-quality experience in the middle of a Houston shopping center.
Opera Gallery is part of a global network of 15 locations founded in 1994. The Houston space shows original paintings, drawings, and sculptures — with plans to include video, photography, and installation work, too. The inaugural show featured Picasso, Monet, Chagall, Keith Haring, Yayoi Kusama, Alexander Calder, Fernando Botero, Joan Miró, and more. Exhibitions rotate three to four times a year. A solo show for Spanish artist Manolo Valdés is planned for October. His sculpture already stands outside the gallery, and three more outdoor installations are planned around the district. You may also recognize Jean Dubuffet, whose Monument au Fantôme sculpture stands at Discovery Green near the George R. Brown Convention Center — his work appears inside the gallery, too.
Just walk in. No ticket, no reservation, no purchase needed. Browse at your own pace and get as close to the art as you like. If you visit with kids or a school group, ask staff about hands-on experiences — the gallery has offered similar programs at past locations. Keep an eye on the exhibition schedule so you can plan a return visit before shows rotate. If you are interested in collecting, staff are available to talk through the works on view.

River Oaks District, Houston
Opera Gallery's deputy director serves on the public arts committee at Houston Arts Alliance, connecting the gallery to the city's broader arts ecosystem. The gallery is also in early conversations with institutions in the Texas Medical Center about displaying artwork for patients and families. Houston collectors who previously bought from Opera Gallery's New York and Paris locations can now shop and engage locally.
Houston has always had a strong arts community, and Opera Gallery adds something new to that mix. You get free, close-up access to original masterworks — not prints or reproductions. The gallery also plans to partner with local schools and the Texas Medical Center, so its reach goes well beyond River Oaks. If you care about art in this city, this is worth knowing about.
