Overview
Houston Habitat for Humanity helps working families become homeowners by building affordable houses together. This isn't charity - it's partnership. Families invest 250 hours of sweat equity, working alongside volunteers to build their own homes. They also complete financial literacy and home maintenance classes to prepare for homeownership. Since 1987, we've built over 1,200 homes across 15 Houston neighborhoods, from Third Ward to East End to Acres Homes. These aren't just houses - they're stable foundations for families to build wealth and stronger communities. When families own homes, children do better in school, neighborhoods become more stable, and local businesses thrive. Houston Habitat welcomes all families regardless of background, focusing on need, ability to pay an affordable mortgage, and willingness to partner. Homeowners pay zero-interest mortgages, making monthly payments affordable for working families. The program transforms entire blocks, bringing new energy and investment to established neighborhoods. To get involved, families can apply through Houston Habitat's website or attend an information session. Volunteers can help build homes on weekends. Corporate groups and faith communities regularly sponsor builds. Visit houstonhabitat.org to learn about current projects, volunteer opportunities, and application deadlines. This is how we build stronger Houston together.
