Analysis Qualifying Exam

The Rice University Mathematics Department requires all doctoral and non-thesis master's students to pass three general written qualifying exams covering algebra, analysis, and topology. The Analysis Qualifying Exam tests graduate-level knowledge of real and complex analysis. Exams are offered every August (just before classes begin), January, and May (just after finals), giving students multiple opportunities each year. Students must pass all three qualifying exams by the May sitting at the end of their fourth semester. The Graduate Committee evaluates performance and prefers complete, clearly written solutions. Past exams and syllabi are available on the department's website to help students prepare. This particular sitting is scheduled for Monday, August 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CDT (15:00–22:00 UTC), on the Rice University campus at Herman Brown Hall for Mathematical Sciences, 6100 Main Street, Houston, TX 77005. Only currently enrolled Rice mathematics graduate students participate; the exam is not open to the general public.
