Refugees are people who had to leave their home countries because they were being hurt or threatened because of who they are - their race, religion, or beliefs. They can't go back home because it's not safe. The United States helps refugees by letting them come here to live safely.
Minnesota has welcomed over 100,000 refugees since 1970, mostly from countries like Burma, Somalia, and Ukraine. When refugees come to America, they can work right away and eventually become U.S. citizens. They help make communities stronger by starting businesses, paying taxes, and sharing their cultures.
Getting to America as a refugee is very hard - less than half of 1% of refugees worldwide get this chance. They have to go through many interviews and health checks that can take years. Once they arrive, groups like the Minnesota Council of Churches help them find homes, learn English, and start new lives.
Refugees bring valuable skills and hope to their new communities.
