Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed three important housing laws that will make it easier to build more homes across the state. The first law, HB 24, changes zoning rules so neighbors can't easily block new housing projects - now 60% of people must object instead of just 20%. The second law, SB 840, lets developers turn empty strip malls and parking lots into homes and apartments in big cities, similar to what Florida did to create over 15,000 new homes in one year.
The third law, SB 2477, allows empty office buildings to be converted into housing, which 71% of Texans support. These changes help address Texas's housing shortage by making it easier to build homes without raising taxes or using government money. The laws focus on using existing spaces better and giving property owners more rights to decide what to build.
Texans for Reasonable Solutions, the group that pushed for these laws, says this will lead to lower rents, less suburban sprawl, and more housing opportunities. They're still waiting to see what happens with another bill, SB 15, that would allow building homes on smaller lots in new neighborhoods.
