One Small Step is a program by StoryCorps that helps people have real conversations with others who have different political views. Instead of arguing or debating, two strangers spend 50 minutes getting to know each other as people. They talk about their families, what matters to them, and what shaped their lives - not about politics.
Over 7,000 people in all 50 states have participated through online video calls, public radio stations, college campuses, and libraries. Research at Yale University found that these conversations help people feel more empathy toward those with opposing views. The goal is simple: see each other as human beings instead of enemies.
You can sign up online to be matched with someone, visit participating radio stations, join campus programs, or listen to recorded conversations. All you need is 50 minutes, an open mind, and curiosity about another person's story. Many participants say the conversation isn't long enough and stay in touch afterward.
