This analysis, and the follow-up coverage from the New York Times , constructed company-level and industry-level Generative AI exposure scores to show where these impacts will be most acutely felt, and where industries and firms will be more insulated from the tectonic shifts GenAI will bring.
Using data made available by Felten, Raj and Seamans, Burning Glass Institute economists built an AI exposure measure combining two key considerations: potential exposure of occupations to AI, and the occupational shares of each industry’s and employer’s total payroll spending. These two figures come together to indicate which companies should expect the greatest impact on their workforces from GenAI.
