Over 100 churches and community groups in the Bronx are working with Congressman Ritchie Torres to help public housing residents learn about a free repair hotline. The Ombudsperson Call Center (OCC) is an independent agency that helps NYCHA (public housing) residents get repairs done in their homes. Residents can call 24/7 or go online to report problems like mold or leaks, and someone will respond within one business day.
The problem is that many people don't know this service exists. More than 30,000 families have already used the service and gotten help. The groups are starting a social media campaign to spread the word.
Residents can call the OCC at 1-888-341-7152 or visit ombnyc.com, or they can use NYCHA's regular repair line at 718-707-7771. This story shows how community organizations and elected officials can work together to help residents access services they need for safe, healthy homes.
